The lonely battle for dignity: Individuals struggling with multiple sclerosis.Vibeke Lohne, Trygve Aasgaard, Synnøve Caspari, Åshild Slettebø & Dagfinn Nåden - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (3):301-311.
Much is known about the phenomenon of dignity, yet there is still a need for implementing this understanding in clinical practice. The main purpose of this study was to find out how persons suffering from multiple sclerosis experience and understand dignity and violation in the context of a rehabilitation ward. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used to extract the meaningful content of narratives from 14 patients with multiple sclerosis. Data were collected by personal research interviews. The findings revealed three main themes: (...)

  3. The Unity of Space in Kant’s Pre-Critical Philosophy.Dai Heide - 2022 - Journal of Modern Philosophy 4 (1):7.
Much recent attention has been paid to Kant’s account of the unity of space in the Critique of Pure Reason, not least because of the significant implications of that view for other key critical-period doctrines. But far less attention has been paid to the development of Kant’s account of the unity of space. This paper aims to offer a systematic account of Kant’s pre-critical account of the unity of space. On the view presented herein, Kant’s early account of the unity (...)

  4. A mereological argument for the non‐spatiotemporality of things in themselves.Dai Heide - 2019 - European Journal of Philosophy (1):1-29.
Kant’s published arguments for the non-spatiotemporality of things in themselves have not been well received. I argue that Kant has available to himself an argument for the non-spatiotemporality of things in themselves that is premised upon a disparity between the compositional structure of the intelligible world and the structure of space and time. I argue that Kant was unwaveringly committed to the premises of this argument throughout his career and that he was aware of their idealistic implications. I also argue (...)

Autonomy, identity and health: defining quality of life in older age.Sara Kate Heide - 2022 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (5):353-356.
Defining quality of life is a difficult task as it is a subjective and personal experience. However, for the elderly, this definition is necessary for making complicated healthcare-related decisions. Commonly these decisions compare independence against safety or longevity against comfort. These choices are often not made in isolation, but with the help of a healthcare team. When the patient’s concept of quality of life is miscommunicated, there is a risk of harm to the patient whose best interests are not well (...)

  7. Beyond the Polemics: Freedom and Necessity in Plotinus and St Maximus Confessor.Daniel Heide - 2024 - Heythrop Journal 65 (1):49-63.
The aim of this paper is to challenge the prevailing polemic between ‘necessary’ emanation and ‘free’ creation. I begin by arguing for the presence of freedom and volition in the emanationism of Plotinus. I then move on to explore the role of necessity in the creationism of Maximus. In both cases, I rely upon a twofold schematisation of freedom and necessity to dissolve the dichotomy between them effectively. Having levelled the playing field, so to speak, I conclude that, all things (...)

  8. Rationalism and Kant's Rejection of the Ontological Argument.Dai Heide - 2021 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 59 (4):583-606.
Kant rejects the ontological argument on the grounds that the ontological argument inescapably must assume that existence is a “determination” or “real predicate,” which it is not. Most understand Kant’s argument for this claim to be premised upon his distinctive proto-Fregean theory of existence. But this leaves Kant dialectically vulnerable: the defender of the ontological argument can easily reject this as question-begging. I show that Kant relies upon two distinct arguments, both of which contend that the claim that existence is (...)

  9. The Transcendental Aesthetic and the Leibnizian Theory of Space.Dai Heide - 2025 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 63 (3):405-428.
In considering Kant’s response to the Leibnizian theory of space in the Transcendental Aesthetic, scholars have overwhelmingly emphasized Kant’s response to Leibniz’s relationalism. They have largely missed the metaphysically realistic aspects of Leibniz’s theory with which Kant is primarily concerned. As such, scholars have failed to appreciate the threat Leibniz’s theory poses to Kant’s idealism, a point made publicly as early as 1786 by H. A. Pistorius. I argue that the Aesthetic does indeed contain a compelling argument against the Leibnizian (...)

Naturecultures and the affective (dis)entanglements of happy meat.Heide K. Bruckner, Annalisa Colombino & Ulrich Ermann - 2019 - Agriculture and Human Values 36 (1):35-47.
In recent decades, there has been a proliferation of alternative food networks which promote an agenda of reconnection, allegedly linking consumers and producers to the socio-ecological origins of food. Rarely, however, does the AFN literature address “origins” of food in terms of animals, as in the case of meat. This article takes a relational approach to the reconnection agenda between humans and animals by discussing how the phenomenon of animal welfare and “happy” meat are enacted by producers and consumers in (...)

Kant describes the concept of freedom as “the keystone of the whole structure of a system of pure reason, even of speculative reason.” Kant’s theory of freedom thus plays a foundational and unifying role in all aspects of his philosophy and is thus of significant interest to historians of Kant’s philosophy. Kant’s theory of freedom has also played a significant role in contemporary debates in metaphysics, normative ethics, and metaethics. This volume brings historians of Kant’s philosophy into conversation with contemporary (...)

Ethik in der Apotheke: Wissen, Vertrauen und Kommunikation im Kontext der Pharmazie.Rainer Heide - 2019 - Wiesbaden: Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden.
Biol. Pacific Island communities are facing rapid changes to their food systems in the context of globalization, environmental degradation and climate change. While in urban areas residents face a rapid nutrition transition, in rural environments, concerns are being raised about how to best maintain traditional food systems that are nutritious and sustainable. Mangrove forests are part of biodiverse food environments that support rural communities in the Pacific, but they are often overlooked in food system research because they occur between sea and (...)

Abstract‘Critique’ means the questioning judgement of human actions, particularly with reference to a criterion of judgement that is inseparable from the judged state of affairs but is dependent on a decision of the person judging. Informative judgements of a state of affairs contain two relevant components, one concerned with recognition of the objects of judgment, the other concerned with their evaluation. This evaluation is not directly extractable from that state of affairs, but the quality of the evaluation does depend in (...)

On the Political Economy of Maritime Labour.Heide Gerstenberger - 2025 - Historical Materialism 33 (2):3-42.
The article argues that seafaring labour is not only conditioned by the forces of nature and the economic strategies of ship-owners but also by practices of political sovereignty. Any ship that is registered in a certain state is made into a partition of the political sovereignty of this state. This legal construction has since been worn down by the effects of globalisation. The costs of operating ships could be reduced by registering ships in new flag states with less stringent regulations. (...)

    ʻHow Bourgeois Were the Bourgeois Revolutions?ʼ.Heide Gerstenberger - 2019 - Historical Materialism 27 (3):191-209.
While the overview concerning debates on bourgeois revolutions is impressive, it cannot elucidate the theoretical concept of bourgeois revolutions. Neil Davidson’s own suggestion centres on the removal of hindrances to the breakthrough of capitalism, especially the pre-capitalist state. This formalistic definition is based on the assumption that revolutions occurred when the superstructure became a hindrance to the further development of productive forces. It deprives the theoretical concept of bourgeois revolutions of any concrete historical content. This paper suggests restricting the use (...)

On Stepping Stones and Other Calamities of Marxist Historiography.Heide Gerstenberger - 2021 - Historical Materialism 29 (3):224-244.
Historical research is always in danger of being made use of for explaining and illustrating instead of testing one’s theoretical conceptions. Since Marxist historical research has certainly not been exempt from this temptation, one has to start any debate about Marxist historiography with the demand to accord empirical research the chance to shake even the cornerstones of one’s own theoretical conceptions. In a paper that has triggered off a new discussion on ‘Political Marxism’, Samuel Knafo and Benno Teschke insist on (...)

This translation, and the commentaries that accompanied it, are concerned with the literal meaning of the Scriptures, and with questions of theology and philosophy. Saadya’s Arabic version of the Pentateuch is known as the Tafsīr and is not only a literal translation but also a condensed summary of the proper meaning of the Scriptures. In this commentary we describe findings in normal human subjects and in patients with visual hemineglect that support the importance of higher-level influences on saccade generation during visual exploration. As the duration of fixations increases with increases in the cognitive demand of the task, the timing of exploratory saccades is controlled more by centers of cognitive and perceptual processing at levels 4 and 5 than by reflex-like automatic processes at level 3. In line with this, unilateral frontal eye field lesions (...)

This book describes how medieval Jewish Bible scholars sought to answer the question of what is meant by the Angel’s message from God to Abraham: ‘Now I Know’, as written in Genesis 22 verse 12. It examines these scholars’ comments on the nineteen verses in Genesis that tell the story of Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his own son Isaac, the Aqedat Yiṣḥaq. It explores the answers they found to the question of what, indeed, this story is trying to tell us. (...)
